Janice asks:
Why is my aquarium water cloudy?
Gale answers:
Most new set-ups develop a bacterial bloom. As long as
you're not overfeeding, the water will clear within a week or
two, when good bacteria establish themselves and
counteract the problem. This also goes for new ponds. Keep
the pumps going and be patient.

Mark asks:
What can I do about aphids on my water lily leaves?
Gale answers:
Get some dormant oil spray from your local garden center
and spray one tablespoon per gallon on all the leaves. Be
sure to keep your pump running so the fish don't run out of
oxygen.

Myron writes:
Love the pictures! Reminds me of all that bloomed when I
was a kid back in Kansas. Needless to say, Arizona has its
own beauty...but daffodils don't like it down here.
Occassionally you will see some good iris. Not cold
enough for the bulbs tho. Hope things are going well for
you. More later.
Gale answers:
Thanks for writing, Myron. I'm happy to know you're
enjoying them. Keep coming back. I have lots more
flowers, vines, and shrubs blooming daily!

Tracy writes:
hi:) What's the best food 4 adults and fry all in together?
Gorgeous arent they?
Gale answers:
Hi, Tracy! I presume you're talking about guppies. I prefer
high quality Tetra Min Tropical Flakes, Pro Mix if you can
find it. Just be sure to rub the flakes between your index
finger and thumb as you feed. For goldfish or koi, use
Tetra Min Goldfish Flakes. Thanks for your question!

Jeni writes:
I have an established pond (liner) in my new yard that was
unattended for at least 4 yrs. We dug out all the muck and
yuck, now the water is free flowing, but we are having
trouble keeping it clear, and have had no luck with fish. We
are using the filter that we found in the pond. It runs, and
we have a nice fountain, but I wonder if it is enough. Any
suggestions?
Gale answers:
Hi, Jeni, It's probably just a matter of time until the water
clears. I recommend adding plants, in particular water
hyacinths, to aid the pond's natural filtration system. Water
lilies will help block excess sunlight if your water is green.
As for the fish, try only a couple at a time, and whatever
you do, don't buy "feeder" goldfish as they are usually
sick from overcrowding. Good luck!

Kris writes:
Please tell me what zone you are in. I grow and love
daffodils and am always looking for ones that grow well in
the south.
Gale answers:
HI Kris! I live in the southern part of Oklahoma's Zone 7. It
gets pretty hot here in the summer, although days over 100
usually number less than 10. Our winters are usually mild,
rarely going below 10 degrees above zero. All the daffodils
seem to prosper here, but the ones that do best for me, in
terms of increasing, are regular sized Ice Follies,
Fortissimo, Salome, & dwarfs Tete-a-Tete and Hawera.
Thanks for writing.
